Our crusty artisan sourdough breads are best enjoyed fresh, but a quick refresh can bring back much of that just-baked texture.

To store: Keep the bread bagged at room temperature in a cool, dry place for up to 3 days. Avoid refrigeration, which can cause bread to stale more quickly.

To freeze: For longer storage, freeze the loaf or individual slices in a well-sealed freezer-safe bag. Slicing before freezing makes it easy to take out only what you need.

To thaw: Allow a whole or partial loaf to thaw at room temperature while still wrapped. Individual slices can be toasted directly from frozen.

To refresh: Lightly mist the crust with water and warm in a 350°F oven for about 5–10 minutes, until the crust is crisp and the center is warmed to your liking. Allow it to rest briefly before slicing.

Soft & Sandwich Breads

Accepted Answer

Soft breads—including sandwich-style loaves and Rizzo's Pan Sobao—are meant to stay tender, so they need a slightly different approach from crusty artisan breads.

To store: Keep tightly bagged at room temperature in a cool, dry place for up to 3 days. Keeping the bag well closed helps prevent moisture loss.

To freeze: Freeze the loaf whole or sliced in a tightly sealed freezer-safe bag. If freezing individual slices, separating them before freezing makes serving easier.

To thaw: Thaw at room temperature while wrapped to help retain moisture. Individual slices can also be gently warmed or toasted directly from frozen.

To refresh: These breads generally don't need an oven refresh. If you'd like them warm, heat an individual slice briefly in the microwave—about 5–10 seconds—or warm gently in a toaster or low oven. Avoid overheating, which can make soft bread tough or dry.

Cinnamon Rolls

A little warmth can help restore the soft texture and bring the cinnamon, butter, and glaze back to life.

To store: Keep cinnamon rolls well covered or in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2–3 days.

To freeze: Wrap individual rolls well and place them in a freezer-safe container or bag. Freezing individually makes it easy to enjoy one at a time.

To thaw: Thaw covered at room temperature before warming, or use your microwave's defrost setting gently.

To refresh: Microwave an individual roll for approximately 10–15 seconds, then add a few seconds at a time if needed. The goal is pleasantly warm and soft—not hot. Because microwave strength and roll size vary, shorter is better to start.

Scones & Muffins

Scones and muffins are especially sensitive to moisture loss, so keeping them well sealed is important.

To store: Keep in an airtight container or well-sealed bag at room temperature for up to 2–3 days.

To freeze: Wrap individually and place in a freezer-safe bag or container. This protects their texture and makes individual portions easy to remove.

To thaw: Thaw at room temperature while wrapped or covered.

To refresh: Warm in a 300°F oven for approximately 5–8 minutes. For a quicker option, microwave an individual muffin or scone for about 10 seconds, adding a few seconds if necessary.

For scones, I favor the oven method when possible—it does a better job of restoring the exterior while gently warming the center.

Proper storage helps preserve the texture of your cookies, whether you prefer them at room temperature or slightly warmed.

To store: Keep cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for several days. Keep the container tightly closed to prevent them from drying out.

To freeze: Place cookies in a freezer-safe container or bag, separating layers with parchment paper if necessary.

To thaw: Allow cookies to come to room temperature while covered.

To refresh: For that warm-cookie experience, heat an individual cookie in the microwave for approximately 5–10 seconds, or warm several cookies in a 300°F oven for about 3–5 minutes.
